If you’re gearing up for Thanksgiving, you’re probably also preparing for the holiday shopping season, which conventionally kicks off on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. You may also have heard of Giving Tuesday and have questions about it. Here’s what Giving Tuesday is, why it matters, and how you can get in on the tradition this year.

What Is Giving Tuesday All About?

Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 as a way to balance out consumerist holiday spending on self and inner circle with charitable donations for global causes. Although it began in the US, it is now recognized in more than 70 countries. It immediately follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and it allows people to choose missions and organizations they care about and show their support during the season of giving. Giving Tuesday requires little time or effort: most nonprofits have user-friendly online platforms that allow you to give in just a few clicks.

Giving Tuesday—and philanthropy in general—is important because it allows people to help solve major problems globally and locally. It allows charitable organizations to continue and expand their services, and it empowers individuals to make a meaningful difference in their communities and in the world. This is particularly gratifying during times of unprecedented environmental crises, natural disasters, social and economic injustice, and other conflicts.

Ways To Participate in Giving Tuesday

Regardless of the time or budget you have available, you can support worthwhile causes on the philanthropic holiday. Here are some ways to do this:

  • Volunteer. Volunteer on a one-time or recurring basis; sometimes the former can be a great way to get your feet wet for the latter. Invite your friends and family members, and get the satisfaction of giving hands-on support.
  • Donate. Give a one-time or recurring gift to an organization whose mission is aligned with your interests. Even a small amount can make a big difference, especially if you sign up for recurring donations.
  • Involve your employer. Find out if your employer might be interested in becoming a corporate sponsor for or partner with a nonprofit. You may be successful if the organization’s mission aligns with that of your employer or is popular among coworkers, customers, and community members.
  • Purchase wish list items. Many nonprofits have wish lists of items they need or run out of most. Keep in mind that some retailers offer donation programs when you make a purchase from them, and you can set these up to support the organization of your choice.

Please contact us if you need to make an appointment for services.

It’s people like you that make Cristo Rey possible. Whether you enjoy giving your time, talent or treasures, you have something valuable to offer the Greater Lansing community.
