Thursday, May 12, 2016, was another successful day distributing food to those in need, with the help of many new and familiar faces. Boxes were assembled and dispersed to individuals in need of more groceries to feed themselves and their families.
Boxes contained an assortment of fruits, vegetables, starches, dairy, and meat to ensure community members are able to maintain balanced diets. There were sweet and russet potatoes, milk, marinated chicken, onions, lettuce, cabbage, raisins, bananas and apples in the grocery boxes.
Cristo Rey Community Center enjoys the opportunity to connect with new volunteers. Among the new faces helping to make an impact in Lansing, was a group of six from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. eMily Alemán-McAlpine, Senior Community Liaison, Community Responsibility at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, says, “We love the work Cristo Rey does in the community.” She adds, “It’s important to support centers like this, that provide necessities like food that people wouldn’t get otherwise.”

Steve, another regular at the center, works as a volunteer within and outside the center to better the lives of community members. As a retired teacher, and a member of the East Lansing Catholic Network, Steve advocates for children, poor and immigrants.
