The Cristo Rey Community Center Family Health Center Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the Health Care Provider in preparation for appointments. This includes directing patients; taking vital signs; performing immunizations, injections, and blood draws; charting patient information; and dispensing medications are directed. It is the Medical Assistant’s duty to ensure patient comfort, monitor the cleanliness of the exam rooms and the temperature of the refrigerator, as well as keeping track of equipment stock. Other duties include assisting providers with physical exams and surgical procedures.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct patient care under the direction of the Health Care Providers and/or Medical Director
  • Escort patient to exam room and obtain medical history and vital signs
  • Must be comfortable performing pediatric immunizations, vital signs and assist with minor pediatric procedures
  • Chart all information appropriately in patient’s electronic medical record (EMR)
  • Administer medications per provider’s orders and document appropriately in EMR
  • Perform injections and obtain pharyngeal, nasal, and capillary blood samples for point of care lab testing per provider’s orders
  • Perform diagnostic testing, EKGs, visual and audio tests, and PFTs per provider’s orders
  • Assist provider with female physical exams and female providers with male exams as needed
  • Assist provider with surgical procedures to include bandaging and after-care instructions
  • Identify critically ill patients that need immediate attention and inform a provider
  • Assist providers with patient follow-up and other necessary tasks in the best interest of the patient
  • Document temperatures of the pediatric vaccine freezer and refrigerator daily per protocol
  • Clean exam rooms and keep stocked with appropriate equipment and lab testing supplies
  • Notify appropriate health center staff member when supplies must be reordered
  • Perform controls on equipment as required on a daily/weekly basis, as instructed by Senior Medical Assistant
  • Immunization and injection record maintenance including the online Michigan Care Improvement Registry for all immunizations
  • Assist with filing, faxing, and chart maintenance as needed
  • Run the laboratory autoclave when necessary
  • Obtain voicemail messages at least three times daily and send messages to appropriate parties by the end of each work day as part of the Medical Assistant team
  • Accepts direction from Senior Medical Assistant regarding daily Medical Assistant team operations
  • Responsible to the Senior Medical Assistant, Medical Practice Office Manager, and Medical Director

Qualifications:

  • Medical knowledge to understand medical procedures and medical language
  • Knowledge of medical ethics and confidentiality
  • Ability to work with persons from various backgrounds
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to read and write the English language well
  • Familiar with medical documentation
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English highly preferred
  • Able to work with and without supervision
  • Must have reliable transportation
  • Must act in an ethical manner, in compliance with all CRCC policies and relevant laws

Education & Experience Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Minimum 1 year in Medical Assistance
  • Must have received previous training with MCIR, preferably VFC-specific trainings
